Helga Hufflepuff

"I'll teach the lot and treat them just the same."
Helga Hufflepuff
—Professor Hufflepuff's view, unlike that of the other founders.
Professor Helga Hufflepuff was a witch of Medieval times and was one of the four founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. While the other founders chose to have special students, Hufflepuff accepted them all, but the students of her house are described as loyal and hard-working. It is unknown when she died. Helga's portrait remains at Hogwarts.

Biography
Early life
                 "... from valley broad..."
—The Sorting Hat on Hufflepuff's birthplace.
Helga Hufflepuff was born in the 10th Century and came from the broad valleys of Wales.
Founder of Hogwarts
Helga Hufflepuff was one of the four Founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She was a friend of Rowena Ravenclaw. Hufflepuff helped to build the school, and admitted students into her House that were unafraid of hard work. While the other Founders took students based on either ambition, bravery, or intelligence, Helga Hufflepuff took the rest, treating them all equally and teaching them all she knew. She brought people from different backgrounds together to help in the building of the school, and was known for her charming ways.
Helga Hufflepuff had a gift for food-related Charms, and her recipes are still used as the basis for many Hogwarts feasts. Helga Hufflepuff also arranged for the House-elf contingent to work in the kitchens, giving them somewhere safe to work where they would not be mistreated or abused.
Post-mortem
Helga Hufflepuff lent her name to one of the four Houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Hufflepuff. She does not appear to have applied particularly strict standards of selection to her house, which sets her apart from the other Founders by making her an egalitarian.
One relic of Hufflepuff's, a small golden cup, had been passed down to her distant descendant Hepzibah Smith. Smith said the cup was supposed to have some magical powers, many of which she had not tested. The Cup was stolen from Smith by Tom Marvolo Riddle, who changed it into a Horcrux. The Cup was destroyed by Hermione Granger with a Basilisk fang during the Battle of Hogwarts in 1998.
The symbol of Hufflepuff house is the badger, and the colours are yellow and black.
Personality and traits
Hufflepuff favoured loyalty, honesty, fair play, and hard work. Members of her Hogwarts House usually display at least one of these traits in varying degrees. Cedric Diggory, the deceased Triwizard Tournament Champion, was one of the students who appeared to embody all four. Additionally, Hufflepuff was renowned for her compassionate nature; she took in the House Elves to work in Hogwarts Kitchen where they could work in peace and safety and while the other founders were careful in selection of students, Hufflepuff took in the rest.
Magical abilities and skills
§  Magical device inventor: Hufflepuff created a cup which, according to descendant Hepzibah Smith, had magical powers.
§  Charms: Hufflepuff was skilled with cooking charms, as many of her recipes are still used in Hogwarts.
Etymology
§  The name Helga is from Helge, from Old Norse heilagr, meaning "prosperous" or "brave." Their symbol is the badger, a large mammal related to the weasels with distinctive white stripes on its head. In Celtic mythology, a badger was a guide. The badger also can symbolize a tendency to be hard-working, strong and tenacious (sticking to something and not giving up). Hufflepuffs are known for loyalty and hard work.
§  Hufflepuff could mean "huff and puff", or blustery. "Huff" also means to breathe; "Puff" is a Medieval term for pastry.

Rowena Ravenclaw

"Wit beyond measure is man's greatest treasure."
—Rowena Ravenclaw
Professor Rowena Ravenclaw was a witch of Medieval Times and one of the four founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She was noted for her cleverness and creativity, and was described as "beautiful." The Sorting Hat described her as "fair Ravenclaw, from glen," suggesting she was from Scotland. She had a daughter, Helena, who stole her mother's diadem and fled toAlbania. Desiring to see her daughter again, Rowena sent the Baronto search for her, although neither he nor Helena returned alive. Rowena Ravenclaw died a short time later. Her portrait remains at Hogwarts.

Biography
Early life
"Fair Ravenclaw, from glen..."
—The Sorting Hat on Ravenclaw's birthplace.
Image:Ravenclaw with her wand.

Rowena Ravenclaw was born in thetenth century. She came from a glen most likely in Scotland, she was either born or married into the Ravenclaw family, though that may have been her birth family. She was a good friend ofHelga Hufflepuff, from the Welsh valleys.
At an unknown time and by unknown means, Ravenclaw acquired a wand. It is possible that she made it herself.
Founding of Hogwarts
Along with her friends Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff andSalazar Slytherin, Ravenclaw founded Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She devised the ever-changing, moving staircases in the Hogwarts Castle. She was particularly close to Helga Hufflepuff ; their friendship is used as a foil to the failed friendship between Godric Gryffindor and Salazar Slytherin. As with the other founders, she is the namesake of one of Hogwarts' four houses.
Ravenclaw is described by the Sorting Hat as having selected students according to intelligence and wisdom.Ravenclaw house therefore values a sharp mind, wisdom, creativity, and cleverness in its members. Thus, rather than asking for a password from members, a bronze eagle door knocker asks them a riddle which, if answered incorrectly, would force the student to wait until another could answer the question correctly, allowing the failed student to learn.
Door Knocker: "Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?"
Luna Lovegood: "...I think the answer is that a circle has no beginning."
Door Knocker: "Well reasoned."
— a riddle at the Ravenclaw common room entrance
Later life
Image:Rowena's daughter Helena as a ghost

Ravenclaw died at a relatively young age, though legend had it that a "broken heart" contributed to her early demise. This may have been her estrangement with her daughter, Helena Ravenclaw, who after her death became Ravenclaw house's patron ghost known as the Grey Lady.
Helena stole her mother's diadem, which had the phrase wit beyond measure is man's greatest treasure engraved upon it and was said to enhance the wisdom of the wearer. Helena was jealous of her mother's famous intellect, and took the diadem in hopes of surpassing her. Despite this betrayal, Rowena opted to keep the loss of her daughter and diadem a secret from others, and denied it even from her fellow founders.

Image:Rowena Ravenclaw in a portrait.

When Rowena became fatally ill, she asked the Bloody Baron, who was in love with Helena, to go find her daughter, merely wishing to see her one more time, disregarding her treason. He eventually tracked her to Albania, but when she refused to return with him, the Baron flew into a rage and killed her. Immediately overcome with guilt, he then took his own life, and would become the Slytherin patron ghost. Thus, Rowena did not get the chance to reconcile with her daughter before their deaths.
Tom Marvolo Riddle was able to charm the location of the diadem out of the Grey Lady centuries later. He turned it into a Horcrux and hid it in Hogwarts' Room of Requirement. The diadem was destroyed by cursed fire unleashed by Vincent Crabbe during the Battle of Hogwarts in 1998.
Physical appearance
From the descriptions of Xenophilius Lovegood and her statue in the Ravenclaw Common Room, Rowena Ravenclaw was a beautiful yet slightly intimidating woman with long black hair and striking dark eyes. Ravenclaw's beauty could also be a trait for her house, as some of the characters who are in Ravenclaw are described as attractive (Cho Chang, Roger Davies, Luna Lovegood, and Padma Patil).
Personality and traits
Little is actually known about Rowena's personality aside from her intelligence, and the fact that she valued the same in her students. However, it's clear she loved her daughter, Helena, and was forgiving enough to disregard the fact that Helena stole her famous Diadem and ran away to Albania, in favour of seeing her daughter one last time before she died.
Magical abilities and skills
Ravenclaw was described as the most brilliant witch of her time.
§  Magical architect: Ravenclaw created the moving staircases of Hogwarts.
§  Magical device inventor: She created a diadem which enhanced the wearer's wisdom.
Etymology
Image:Rowena Ravenclaw on a Chocolate Frog card.
§  Rowena is a Latinised form of an old Germanic name: "Fame" (cf. the Anglo-Saxon hrōd, or hrōð), and "Joy", (cf. the Anglo-Saxon wyn(n)), or "Friend", (cf. the Anglo-Saxon wine). Rowena, Queen of Britain, is a figure in Britain's traditional history; she was supposedly the daughter of Hengest and the wife of Vortigern.
§  In Welsh poetry, Rowena is named "mother of the nation," which could link in to her being a founder of Hogwarts. She also is another character whose name surfaces in the great epic Ivanhoe.
§  Ravenclaw is simply raven + claw. A raven is a large black bird that belongs to the crow family; however, Ravenclaw's symbol is an eagle. In legend, ravens are known to be smart birds; Ravenclaws are known to be wise and quick learners.
